FLUOXETINE

Fluoxetine is used for treating obsessive compulsive disorder, depression and other panic disorders. It inhibits serotonin reuptake at the presynaptic neuronal lining that causes increase in synaptic concentrations of serotonin. This leads to changes in many functions connected with enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission.

Uses

Fluoxetine is prescribed to treat depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, bulimia nervosa, and panic disorders.

Warnings

Do not give this drug to people with the following conditions:

Those who are using monoamine oxidase inhibitor drugs (MAOIs)
Those who are using pimozide or thioridazine

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

Patient with history of mania or hypomania
Seizure disorder
Diabetes mellitus
Raised intraocular pressure or at risk of acute narrow-angle glaucoma
Patient with risk factors for QT prolongation
Hepatic and severe renal impairment
Elderly
Children
Pregnancy and lactation

Interactions

Fluoxetine may interact with the following medicines:

Serotonergic drugs (e.g. triptans, TCAs, fentanyl, tramadol, lithium, buspirone, tryptophan)
Aspirin
NSAIDs
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
Phenytoin
MAOIs
Pimozide and thioridazine
