TRAMADOL

Tramadol is an opioid pain drug used in treating moderate to moderately severe pain. When taken orally in an immediate-release form, the pain will be relieved within an hour.

Uses

This drug is used to help relieve moderate to moderately severe pain. Tramadol is similar to narcotic analgesics. It works in the brain to change how your body feels and responds to pain.

Warnings

Tramadol should not be used in the following conditions:

  • Suicidal patients
  • Acute intoxication w/ hypnotics
  • Centrally acting analgesics
  • Opioids
  • Psychotropic drugs or alcohol
  • Uncontrolled epilepsy
  • Acute or severe bronchial asthma
  • Hypercapnia or significant respiratory depression
  • Severe renal and hepatic impairment
  • Co-administration with MAOIs or within 2 weeks after withdrawal

Side Effects

Tramadol may have some side effects such as:

  • Agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • Fever
  • Fast heart rate
  • Overactive reflexes
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of coordination
  • Fainting
  • Seizure (convulsions)
  • A red, blistering, peeling skin rash

Precautions

Precautions

Special precautions should be observed in these cases:

  • People who have depression or emotional disturbance
  • Risk of seizure or history of epilepsy
  • Head injury
  • Increased intracranial pressure
  • Renal and hepatic impairment
  • Elderly
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Tramadol may interact with the following:

  • Diazepam
  • Diclofenac Na
  • Flunitrazepam
  • Glyceryl trinitrate
  • Indometacin
  • Midazolam
  • Piroxicam
  • Phenylbutazone
  • Aciclovir
  • Clindamycin

Overdose & Brands

Overdose symptoms may include the following:

  • Slow breathing and heart rate
  • Severe drowsiness
  • Cold and clammy skin
  • Fainting
