MANIC DEPRESSION IN CHILDREN AND TEENS

Manic depression in children and teens is also known as bipolar disorder. It is a type of major affective disorder that affects the mood and characterized by hyper or hypomanic episodes. There are changes from one’s typical behavior along with high energy states. Bipolar disorder is a serious disturbance that needs to be treated.

Symptoms of manic depression  can be hard to distinguish in children and teenagers. It’s frequently difficult to tell whether these are ordinary good and bad times. It may be due to stress, injury or other emotional issues that are not related to manic depression.

These symptoms may include the following:

  • Changes in energy, sleep or activity levels
  • Feelings of emptiness or worthlessness
  • Lack of interest
  • problems with concentration, decision-making, or forgetfulness
  • Restlessness or irritability
  • Changes in appetite
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Long periods of intense joy, excitement, or euphoria
  • Extreme irritability and agitation
  • Easily distracted
  • Having racing thoughts
  • Speaking very quickly
  • Unrealistic thoughts
  • Impulsive or high-risk behaviors

DIAGNOSIS

Even though the diagnosis of children and adolescents with manic depression include similar criteria that are utilized for adults, symptoms in kids and teenagers regularly have different patterns and may not fit conveniently into the diagnostic classes.

Likewise, children who have manic depression often have additional mental health conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or behavioral issues, which can make the diagnosis more difficult. Referral to a child therapist with involvement in bipolar disorders is needed.
