MEROPENEM TRIHYDRATE

Meropenem Trihydrate is an antibiotic that is utilized to treat many bacterial infections. This drug is known as a carbapenem-type of antibiotic. It works by inhibiting the growth of microscopic organisms.

This drug is given as an infusion into a vein as prescribed by the doctor, normally at regular intervals.

Meropenem Trihydrate is used in the following:

  • Severe pneumonia including hospital & ventilator-associated pneumonia
  • Broncho-pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis
  • Complicated UTI
  • Intra-abdominal, skin and soft tissue infections
  • Intra- and post-partum infections
  • Acute bacterial meningitis in adults and children greater than 3 months
  • Bacteremia that occurs in association with or is suspected to be associated with any of infections previously mentioned
  • Management of neutropenic patients with fever that is suspected to be due to bacterial infection.

Do not use Meropenem Trihydrate in patients with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity

Meropenem Trihydrate may have the following side effects:

  • Diarrhea
  • Rash
  • Thrombosis
  • Increased hepatic enzymes
  • Thrombocythemia
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Increased transaminase
  • Pruritus
  • Inflammation
  • Pain

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Antibiotic-associated colitis
  • Pseudo membranous colitis
  • Seizures
  • Concomitant use with valproic acid or sodium valproate or valpromide
  • Patients on controlled sodium diet
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Interactions

Meropenem Trihydrate may interact with the following medicines:

  • Probenecid
  • Valproic acid
  • Oral anticoagulants including warfarin

 

Symptoms of overdose may include the following:

  • Ataxia
  • Dyspnea
  • Convulsions
  • Mortalities

Seek medical help immediately.
