Allopurinol is used for treating hyperuricaemia and gout. It reduces the formation of uric acid in purine metabolism without disturbing the production of important purines.
Allopurinol minimizes uric acid formation by blocking xanthine oxidase that acts as a catalyst in converting hypoxanthine to xanthine and finally to uric acid. As it blocks xanthine oxidase enzyme, uric acid production will be considerably reduced.
Allopurinol is prescribed to treat gout and hyperuricaemia.
