Clomiphene citrate

Clomifene, otherwise called clomiphene, is a drug that is used to treat infertility in females who don’t ovulate. This includes those women who have polycystic ovary disorder. Its use can lead to an increased possibility of twins. It is taken by mouth once per day. Usual side effects include pelvic pain and hot flashes. Clomiphene is called an ovulatory stimulant. It works just like estrogen, a female hormone that creates eggs in the ovaries and discharges them.

Uses

Clomiphene citrate is used to treat infertility in women.

Warnings

Do not give Clomiphene citrate to women with known hypersensitivity to it.

Side Effects

Clomiphene citrate may have the following side effects:

  • Stomach upset
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal/pelvic fullness
  • Flushing (“hot flashes”)
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Mental or mood changes
  • Vision changes, such as blurred vision, spots or flashes

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Ovarian cysts or enlarged ovaries (not due to polycystic ovary syndrome)
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Liver disease
  • Uterus problems (e.g., uterine fibroids, endometriosis)
  • Thyroid/adrenal gland problems
  • Tumor in the brain (pituitary tumor)
  • High levels of fats/triglycerides in the blood

 

Interactions

There is no data regarding interactions with clomiphene citrate.

Overdose & Brands

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Vasomotor flashes
  • Blurring of vision
  • Scotomata
  • Ovarian enlargement with pelvic or abdominal pain
