Atosiban

Atosiban is a synthetic oxytocin peptide analogue which inhibits the effects of oxytocin and vasopressin. It suppresses uterine contractions by reducing its frequency and the tone of uterine musculature to delay premature birth in adult females.

Use this medication precisely as recommended by your physician. Follow the prescription of your doctor carefully.

The medication dose given by your physician is based on your health conditions, other medications or food supplements taken, and your reaction to the treatment. To diminish risks for adverse effects, do not increase your dosage, thus take it regularly, or take it as instructed by your physician. Atosiban is used in the following conditions:

Do not use Atosiban in people with the following conditions:

  • Gestational age not less than 24 weeks or not more than 33 weeks
  • Premature rupture of membranes not more than 30 weeks of gestation
  • Uterine hemorrhage requiring immediate delivery
  • Eclampsia
  • Severe pre-eclampsia
  • Intra-uterine growth retardation withabnormal fetal heart rate
  • Intra-uterine fetal death
  • Suspected intra-uterine infection
  • Placenta praevia(abnormal position of placenta)
  • Abruptio placentae(premature separation of the placenta from the uterus)

Atosiban may have the following side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Flushes
  • Tachycardia
  • Hypotension
  • Hyperglycemia

Injection site reactions:

  • Insomnia
  • Pruritus
  • Rash
  • Pyrexia

Rarely:

  • Uterine hemorrhage
  • Atony

 

Keep in mind that your physician has recommended this drug since he or she has known that the advantage to you is more significant than the risk of adverse reactions. Many individuals utilizing this medicine don’t have serious side effects.

Interactions

Atosiban may interact with the following medicines:

  • Increased risk of pulmonary edema withother tocolytic drugs
