ULIPRISTAL

Ulipristal is a drug that belongs to medicines known as synthetic 19-norprogesterone derivatives. These drugs inhibit progesterone from binding to its receptors, further delaying ovulation by inhibiting the rupture of follicles. It also inhibits implantation in the endometrium and cellular proliferation to reduce uterine fibroids.

Uses

Ulipristal is used for emergency contraception and for uterine fibroids.

Warnings

Ulipristal should not be given to people with the following medical conditions:

Genital bleeding of unknown aetiology other than uterine fibroids
Breast, uterine, cervical, or ovarian cancer
Pregnancy and lactation

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following conditions:

Severe uncontrolled asthma
Moderate to severe liver and severe kidney impairment

Interactions

Ulipristal may interact with the following medicines:

CYP3A4 enzyme inducers (e.g. rifampicin, felbamate, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, topiramate)
Drugs that increase gastric pH (e.g. antacids, H2-blockers, proton pump inhibitors)
CYP3A4 enzyme inhibitors (e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole)
Progestogen
Other hormonal contraceptives

Overdose & Brands
