PROGESTERONE INTRAVAGINAL GEL

Intravaginal progesterone gel is used for supplementing or replacing progesterone in infertile women with progesterone deficiency who are receiving treatment utilizing assisted reproductive technology (ART).

Progesterone intravaginal gel is also used for the treatment of secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstruation).

Common side effects include:

  • Breast enlargement
  • Breast tenderness
  • Sleepiness (somnolence)
  • Cramps
  • Mood swings
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Sleep disorder
  • Perineal pain
  • Nervousness
  • Urinary difficulties
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Headache
  • Breast pain
  • Abdominal pain

Precautions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies before using progesterone. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions like unusual vaginal bleeding that has not been diagnosed by your doctor, liver disease, cancer of the breast or female reproductive organs, a miscarriage with some tissue remaining in the womb or blood clots.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: seizures, migraines, asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, depression, diabetes.

 

Interactions

Some products that may interact with this drug include drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove progesterone from your body (such as rifampin, St. John’s wort, azole antifungals including itraconazole) certain anti-seizure medicines including carbamazepine/phenobarbital/phenytoin.

If you are directed to use any other vaginal products, separate their application from progesterone gel by at least 6 hours.

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call emergency hotline.
