PARECOXIB

Parecoxib is a medicine that belongs to a class of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It plays a major role in reducing mediators of inflammation and pain. The drug is a selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitor and is also referred as COX-2 inhibitor. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandin which in turn inhibits COX-2

Parecoxib is used to treat post-operative pain.

Do not use Parecoxib if you have the following: 

  • Hypersensitivity to Parecoxib
  • History of allergy to sulfonamides
  • History of bronchospasm
  • Acute rhinitis
  • Nasal polyps
  • Angioneurotic edema
  • Urticarial or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Heart failure
  • Ischaemic heart disease
  • Peripheral arterial disease
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Active peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Severe liver impairment
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Parecoxib may have the following side effects:

  • Nausea
  • Pharyngitis
  • Alveolar osteitis
  • Anaemia
  • Hypokalemia
  • Agitation
  • Insomnia
  • Hypoesthesia
  • Dizziness
  • Hypertension
  • Hypotension
  • Respiratory insufficiency
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Dyspepsia
  • Flatulence
  • Pruritus
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Back pain
  • Oliguria
  • Peripheral edema
  • Heart attack
  • Deep-vein thrombosis
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Stroke
  • Deep surgical infections
  • Sternal wound complications
  • Kidney impairment
  • Increased blood creatinine
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Cardiovascular disease (like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia)
  • History of cerebrovascular disease and upper gastrointestinal perforation
  • Obese or dehydrated patient
  • Severe kidney impairment
  • Elderly and children

Interactions

Parecoxib may interact with the following medicines: 

  • Diuretics and antihypertensives
  • Tacrolimus and cyclosporine
  • Warfarin or other anticoagulants
  • Lithium
