Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Allergies: Inform your healthcare provider if you have any known allergies to Piperacillin, Tazobactam, or any other beta-lactam antibiotics (such as penicillins or cephalosporins). Allergic reactions can range from mild rashes to severe hypersensitivity reactions. Caution should be exercised if you have a history of allergies.
  • Kidney function: Piperacillin + Tazobactam is primarily eliminated from the body through the kidneys. If you have impaired kidney function, your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage or monitor your kidney function closely during treatment.
  • Seizure disorders: Piperacillin + Tazobactam may rarely lower the seizure threshold. If you have a history of seizure disorders or conditions that increase the risk of seizures, caution should be exercised, and the benefits and risks of using this medication should be carefully evaluated.
  • Clostridium difficile infection: Antibiotics like Piperacillin + Tazobactam can disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in the gut and potentially lead to a Clostridium difficile infection. If you experience severe diarrhea or abdominal pain during or after treatment, inform your healthcare provider, as this could be a sign of this infection.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: It is important to inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. The use of Piperacillin + Tazobactam during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be carefully evaluated by your healthcare provider, weighing the potential benefits against the potential risks.

Prior to taking this medicine, tell your physician or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or if you have some other hypersensitivities. This drug may contain inert ingredients which can cause unfavorable side effects or different issues. Talk with your pharmacist for more information.

Interactions

Pantazo may interact with the following medicines:

  • Probenecid: Probenecid can increase the blood levels of Piperacillin by reducing its elimination from the body. This can potentially increase the risk of side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage of Piperacillin + Tazobactam if you are taking probenecid.
  • Methotrexate: Piperacillin + Tazobactam may increase the blood levels of methotrexate, a medication used to treat certain cancers and autoimmune conditions. This can potentially increase the risk of methotrexate toxicity. Close monitoring of methotrexate levels and potential adjustments in its dosage may be necessary when used concomitantly with Piperacillin + Tazobactam.
  • Anticoagulants: Piperacillin + Tazobactam may enhance the effects of anticoagulant medications, such as warfarin, leading to an increased risk of bleeding. Regular monitoring of blood clotting parameters is important if you are taking both medications.
  • Other antibiotics: Concurrent use of Piperacillin + Tazobactam with other antibiotics, such as aminoglycosides or vancomycin, may have additive or synergistic effects against certain bacteria. However, the combination should be used cautiously, and your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosages and duration of treatment.
  • Oral contraceptives: Piperacillin + Tazobactam may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills. It is recommended to use additional contraceptive methods while taking this medication and for a short period after completing the treatment. It’s important to note that this is not an exhaustive list of interactions.

The effects of certain medications can change if you consume different medications or herbal products simultaneously. Your physician or pharmacist can prevent or oversee interactions by changing how you utilize your prescriptions or by close checking.
