NICORANDIL

Nicorandil is a drug that is used for the treatment of angina pectoris or chest pain. It acts by dilating small arteries and large blood vessels in the body by opening the potassium channels in the cells. It also stimulates the enzyme guanylate cyclase, to cause vasodilatation in the veins. It improves blood circulation in the heart and prevents heart failure and heart attacks. It is available as an oral tablet.

Nicorandil is used in the treatment of the following:

Do not give Nicorandil in people with the following conditions:

  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Hypotension
  • Left ventricular failure with low filling pressure
  • Lactation

Nicorandil may have the following side effects:

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Hypovolemia
  • Low systolic blood pressure
  • Acute pulmonary edema
  • Pregnancy

 

Interactions

Nicorandil may interact with the following medicines:

  • Alcohol
  • Tricyclic antidepressants
  • Antihypertensives
  • Other vasodilators
  • Sildenafil and other phosphodiesterase type-5 inhibitors
