Naphazoline, an imidazoline derivative sympathomimetic with α-adrenergic activity, produces vasoconstriction. When applied topically to mucous membranes, it reduces swelling and congestion. It is often used in combination with antazoline, an ethylenediamine derivative antihistamine, in ophthalmic preparations. Antazoline may be used as the hydrochloride, phosphate, sulfate or mesilate salts in ophthalmic preprations, usually in a concentration of 0.5%.
