Generic Name: nalbuphine (NAL-byoo-feen)

Description: Nalbuphine is a phenanthrene derivative opioid analgesic which works by blocking certain receptor sites in the central nervous system, which helps to decrease pain. It also produces generalised CNS depression.

  • Treatment and prevention of moderate to severe pain. It may be used before and after surgery and during childbirth.

How to use Nalbuphine

  • Always refer to your doctors instructions before taking this medication. Duration and dosage will be determined by your medical condition and its response to the medication. Make sure to take this medication in the prescribed amount and time period even after symptoms disappear. Discontinuing the medication before completion of treatment may cause incomplete treatment of condition. If Symptoms persist, consult your doctor.

Minor side effects (if these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor)

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness, drowsiness, feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings, nausea, relaxed and calm, sensation of spinning, sleepiness, sweaty, clammy skin, vomiting, dry mouth, headache.

Serious side effects (inform your doctor immediately)

  • Chest pain or discomfort, difficult or labored breathing, difficulty swallowing, fainting, false beliefs that cannot be changed by facts, fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse, puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips or tongue, redness of the face, neck, arms and occasionally, upper chest, seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there, sense of detachment from self or body, shortness of breath, slow or irregular heartbeat, wheezing, Blue lips and fingernails, convulsions, coughing that sometimes produces a pink frothy sputum, decrease in consciousness, difficult, fast, or noisy breathing, sometimes with wheezing, fear or nervousness, fever, hyperventilation, increased sweating, loss of bladder control, muscle spasm or jerking of all extremities, pale skin, shakiness in legs, arms, hands, or feet, sleepiness or unusual drowsiness, stomach pain, sudden loss of consciousness, swelling in legs and ankles, trembling or shaking of hands or feet.
  • Inform your doctor.
    • Allergy to the medication or any allergies.
    • Medical History of sulfite sensitivity, head trauma, increased intracranial pressure, decreased hepatic or renal function, history of drug dependence, recent history of myocardial infarction and patients undergoing biliary tract surgery.
  • Patients who have been taking narcotics chronically may experience withdrawal symptoms which can be controlled by the administration of small increments of morphine to response.
  • May cause respiratory depression approximately equal to that caused by similar doses of morphine
    • can be reversed by naloxone if necessary.
    • not appreciably increased with higher doses of nalbuphine.
  • May impair the mental abilities necessary to perform potentially hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machinery.
  • Should only be used when there is a clear need during pregnancy as it may harm an unborn baby. If you are planning to be pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of use with your doctor.
  • Consult your doctor before breast-feeding as this medication passes into breast milk and although adverse effects are unlikely.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.
