MICARDIS

Micardis is the brand name of the prescription drug Telmisartan that is used to treat high blood pressure. This drug may be used alone or along with other medications.

This drug is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Before taking Micardis, tell your doctor if you have or have ever had:

  • Kidney Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Failure
  • A Blockage Of Your Bile Duct
  • Liver Disease
  • Allergies To Medications

If you have diabetes or takenthe drug Tekturna (aliskiren), your health care provider will probably tell you not to take Micardis.

The most common side effects of this drug are:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Back Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Stomach Upset
  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Diarrhea

Other symptoms may include:

  • impotence
  • reduced renal function
  • allergic reactions

Rhabdomyolysis (inflammation and destruction of muscle) and angioedema (swelling of soft tissues including those of the throat and larynx) are rare but serious side effects of Telmisartan.

Precautions

Before taking Micardis, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can trigger allergic reactions or other problems.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:

  • Liver disease
  • Bile duct blockage
  • High blood levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia)
  • Loss of too much body water and/or minerals (dehydration)

 

Interactions

Notify your doctor and pharmacist about all of your medications and health problems so they can check for any interactions with this medication.

Micardis can increase blood concentrations of digoxin (Lanoxin) and lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid). Therefore blood levels of digoxin and lithium should be monitored and doses adjusted if necessary.

Combining Nicardis with potassium-sparing diuretics (for example, spironolactone (Aldactone), triamterene, amiloride), potassium supplements, or salt substitutes containing potassium may lead to hyperkalemia (elevated potassium in the blood).

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing. Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • fast heartbeat
  • severe dizziness
  • fainting
