METHOXY POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL

Methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta is an injection that is being given subcutaneously or intravenously for the treatment of anemia. It is a continuous erythropoietin receptor activator, and works to stimulate the production of red blood cells through interaction with the erythropoietin receptor on progenitor cells in the bone. There is an increase in RBC production. It is similar to epoetins but it has a longer duration of action.

Methoxy polyethylene glycol -epoetin beta is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Anaemia of chronic renal failure.

Do not give Methoxy polyethylene glycol -epoetin beta to people with the following conditions:

  • History of serious allergic reactions
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Pure red cell aplasia

Methoxy polyethylene glycol -epoetin beta may have the following side effects:

  • Pure red cell aplasia
  • Exacerbation of hypertension
  • Hypertensive encephalopathy
  • Seizures
  • Serious allergic reactions, such as angioedema, bronchospasm, anaphylaxis
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Hypotension
  • Peripheral edema
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Nasopharyngitis
  • Upper respiratorytract infection
  • Dyspnoea
  • UTI
  • Hypervolemia
  • Haemorrhage, changes in platelet count
  • Muscle spasm, bone pain, myalgia
  • Rash
  • Local pain
  • Fever

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

 

Interactions

There is no data regarding drug interactions with Methoxy polyethylene glycol -epoetin beta.

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Elevated hemoglobin levels
  • Severe hypertension
