Description: Lupristone activates locally-acting chloride-channel that increases intestinal secretion. Intestinal motility is increased due to the secretion, thus aiding the passage of stool and relieve the symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic constipation.

Pharmacokinetics:

Absorption: Absorption after oral admin is negligible.

Metabolism: Rapidly and extensively metabolised by carbonyl reductase, likely in the stomach and jejunum.

This medication treats chronic idiopathic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome with constipation. It is also used to treat constipation caused by narcotic (opiate-type) medications in people with ongoing pain due to medical conditions other than cancer.

Lubiprostone belongs to a class of drugs known as chloride channel activators that works by increasing the amount of fluid within your intestines, making the passage of stool easier.This medication may improve symptoms such as bloating and abdominal discomfort, improve stool texture, lessen the need to strain, and decrease the feeling of not completely relieving oneself.

How to use lubiprostone

Take this medication by mouth with food and water as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily. Swallow the medication whole. Do not break or chew the medication.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Use this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to take it at the same times each day.

You should talk to your doctor regularly about whether you still need this treatment.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly if any of these effects persist or worsen:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Vomiting
  • dry mouth
  • runny nose
  • cough
  • fever
  • headache
  • joint/back pain
  • trouble sleeping

Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur:

  • severe diarrhea
  • swelling of arms/legs
  • mental/mood changes

Seek immediate medical attention if you develop any trouble breathing or chest tightness/discomfort/pain.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include:

  • Rash
  • itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
  • severe dizziness
  • trouble breathing

  • Patients with medical history of certain stomach/intestinal problems (blockage, severe diarrhea) or liver disease

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.

Do not flush medications down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company.
