Lidocaine is a synthetic amide with local anesthetic property. It binds to and blocks sodium voltage-gated channels, which is needed for the conduction of impulses, thus stabilizing the neuronal membrane. It also decreases the depolarization of heart ventricles relaxation (diastole), automaticity in the His-Purkinje system, duration of action potential and effective refractory period.
