INDOMETHACIN

Indomethacin belongs to a family of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

This medication is used to treat moderate to severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis. It may also be used to treat shoulder pain caused by bursitis or tendinitis.

Do not use this drug:

  • Without prescription and more than prescribed.
  • Before or after a heart bypass surgery.
  • To elderly without consulting a doctor.
  • To children 14 years old and below.

Common side effects may include:

  • Upset stomach
  • Heartburn
  • Headache
  • Drowsiness or Dizziness

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Your doctor may have prescribed this medication because he or she judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Serious side effects may include:

  • Signs of Kidney Problems (such as Change in the Amount of Urine)
  • Unexplained Stiff Neck
  • Liver Disease
  • Severe Allergic Reaction

Unlikely but serious side effects may include:

  • Swelling of the Hands or Feet (Edema)
  • Sudden or Unexplained Weight Gain
  • Hearing Changes (such as Ringing in the Ears)
  • Mental or Mood Changes
  • Difficult or Painful Swallowing
  • Unusual Tiredness

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these serious side effects.

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to it or if you have other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Your medical condition or history, especially of:
  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Heart Attack, Stroke, or Blood Clot
  • Stomach Ulcers or Bleeding
  • Asthma
  • Liver or Kidney Disease
  • Fluid Retention

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Cholestyramine (Questran)
  • Colestipol (Colestid)
  • Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid)
  • Methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall)
  • Aminoglycosides (Gentamicin)
  • Aspirin or other NSAIDS
  • Alcohol
  • Furosemide (Lasix)
  • Thiazide Diuretics
  • Oral Blood Thinners or Anticoagulants (Warfarin)

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Severe Stomach Pain
  • Vomit that Looks like Coffee Grounds
  • Extreme Drowsiness
  • Slow or Shallow Breathing
  • Confusion
  • Seizures
