GIMERACIL

Gimeracil is a drug that is known as a dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase inhibitor. It inhibits 5-FU degradation more effectively than uracil in laboratory studies. Gimeracil when given with another drug called tegafur can markedly increase the anticancer activity of tegafur.

Gimeracil is used in the treatment of resectable gastric cancer.

Gimeracil should not be given to people with hypersensitivity to it, those who are pregnant and those who are breast-feeding.

Gimeracil may give rise to the following side effects:

  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Sore mouth
  • Hair thinning
  • Rash
  • Loss of appetite
  • Change in taste
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Brittle nails
  • Photosensitivity
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Bone marrow suppression during chemotherapy

Precautions

Extra caution should be observed in people who have the following conditions:

  • Heart problems
  • Kidney problems
  • Liver impairment

Monitor blood counts during chemotherapy.

 

Interactions

Gimeracil may interact with the following medicines:

  • Warfarin
  • Phenytoin

If you have used Gimeracil more than the usual dose, seek medical help immediately.
