Description: Ganciclovir is an acyclic nucleoside analogue of 2’-deoxyguanosine that has antiviral effect against human cytomegalovirus and other human herpes viruses which works by blocking reproduction of the CMV virus.

  • Treatment of CMV eye infection in patients with a weakened immune system.
  • CMV infection prevention in organ transplant patients.

Side effects (inform your doctor immediately):

Severe thrombocytopenia, severe neutropenia, neutropenia, leukopenia, anemia, and decreased creatinine clearance, severe anemia, sore throat and fever, unusual bleeding or bruising, mood or other mental changes, nervousness, pain at place of injection, skin rash, tremor, unusual tiredness and weakness, Decreased vision or any change in vision, abdominal or stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting.

  • The safety and efficacy of ganciclovir has not been established in pediatric patients has not been established. This warrants extreme caution due to the probability of carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicity. Careful evaluation should be done prior to the administration of the drug and should only be given only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
  • Dosage reductions should be considered for those with neutropenia, anemia and/or thrombocytopenia and should not be administered in patients with severe neutropenia (ANC less than 500/microL) or severe thrombocytopenia (platelets less than 25,000/microL).
  • IV solution should not be administered by rapid or bolus IV injection
  • IM or subcutaneous injection of reconstituted ganciclovir IV solution may result in severe tissue irritation due to its high pH (11).
  • Should only be used when there is a clear need during pregnancy as it may harm an unborn baby. If you are planning to be pregnant or think you may be pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of use with your doctor.

Overdose

If overdose is suspected, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.
