FLUNITRAZEPAM

Flunitrazepam is a benzodiazepine that is known to be short acting and has similar effects with diazepam.

Uses

Flunitrazepam is used in the treatment of severe insomnia and in the early stages of anesthesia.

Warnings

Flunitrazepam should not be used by people with the following medical conditions:

  • Pregnancy
  • Severe chronic hypercapnia
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Severe respiratory insufficiency
  • Sleep apnea
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency
  • Children
  • Angle-closure glaucoma
  • Allergy to flunitrazepam or any benzodiazepine

Flunitrazepam may have the following side effects:

  • Sedation
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Dizziness
  • Ataxia
  • Slurred speech
  • Weakness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Confusion
  • Hyperexcitability
  • Nervousness
  • Rare hallucinations
  • Mania
  • Rare hypotension
  • Hypersalivation
  • Dry mouth
  • Rebound insomnia

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Chronic psychosis
  • Phobic or obsession states
  • May precipitate suicide or aggressive behavior
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • Neonates

Interactions

Flunitrazepam may interact with the following medicines:

  • Abiraterone
  • Acepromazine
  • Acetyl sulfisoxazole
  • Agomelatine

Signs of Flunitrazepam overdose include the following:

  • Drowsiness and lightheadedness
  • Sedation
  • Urinary retention
  • GI disturbances
  • Changes in salivation
  • Changes in salivation
  • Amnesia
