FLUCONAZOLE

Fluconazole is used to deal with intense fungal or yeast infections, such as vaginal candidiasis, oropharyngeal candidiasis (thrush, oral thrush), esophageal candidiasis (candida esophagitis), candida infections (which consist of urinary tract infections, peritonitis [inflammation of the lining of abdomen or stomach], and other infections), or fungal (cryptococcal) meningitis. This treatment works by killing the fungus or yeast, or stopping its growth.

Fluconazole is also used to prevent candidiasis in sufferers having bone marrow transplants who have cancer or radiation therapy. It is available as a tablet, a capsule or in powder form

Fluconazole is used to prevent and treat many fungal and yeast infections. It belongs to a class of medicine referred to as azole antifungals. It works by stopping the growth and spread of fungus.

Dosage is based on your clinical situation and response to treatment. For children, dosage is also based on weight. Generally in children, the dose must not exceed six hundred milligrams each day unless directed by your doctor.

Continue to take this drug until the dose is finished, despite the fact that signs disappear after some days. Stopping the drugs too early may keep the fungus growing, which may additionally result in return of the infection.

Common side effects of fluconazole include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Stomach ache

Other side effects include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Dyspepsia
  • Dizziness
  • Reduced levels of potassium
  • Rash
  • Taste disturbance
  • Possible serious side effects such as seizures
  • Decreased quantity of white blood cells
  • Reduced quantity of blood platelets
  • Toxic epidermal necrolysis

Rarely, allergies, along with angioedema (swelling of tissues), might also arise. Liver dysfunction (jaundice, hepatitis) and heart problems have also been associated with fluconazole.

Precautions

Before taking medication, tell your medical health practitioner or pharmacist in case you are allergic to it or to azole antifungals (which includes ketoconazole, itraconazole); or when you have other allergic reactions. This product may also have inactive components that would cause allergic reactions. Contact your pharmacist for more information

Before using this medicine, inform your physician or pharmacist if you have liver disease or kidney disorders.

Fluconazole may additionally cause heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation). QT prolongation can cause rapid/irregular heartbeat and signs such as dizziness and fainting that need medical attention right away.

During pregnancy, this medicinal drug needs to be used only when clearly needed. It may additionally cause damage to an unborn infant if taken in excessive doses every day during the first three months of being pregnant.

Fluconazole passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing baby. Consult your health practitioner before breast-feeding.

 

Interactions

Fluconazole can interact with the following drugs:

  • Clopidogrel
  • Pimozide
  • Quinidine
  • Macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin
  • Asunaprevir
  • Cisapride

If someone has overdosed and has severe signs and symptoms including passing out or trouble breathing, call emergency medical services. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away.
