FIBER

Fiber is the only carbohydrate that cannot be digested by your body. While other carbohydrates are converted into sugar, fiber comes out of the body without digestion. It regulates the utilization of sugars and keeps blood sugar in normal levels. It also suppresses hunger through early satiety.

It is recommended to have a minimum 20 to 30 grams of fiber every day. Whole fruits, whole grains, vegetables and beans are rich in fibers.

Fiber is used as a supplement for the following:

  • To prevent heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Diverticular disease
  • Constipation

Do not take fiber if you have hypersensitivity to it

Fiber may have the following side effects:

  • Gas
  • Stomach cramping

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Any blockage in the stomach
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Appendicitis
  • A sudden change in bowel movements that persists for longer than 2 weeks
  • Bleeding from the rectum

Interactions

There is no data regarding drug interactions with fiber.
