ETHINYLESTRADIOL DROSPIRENONE

Ethinylestradiol Drospirenone is a drug that is a combination of Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone and is an oral contraceptive. Drospirenone has little anti-mineralocorticoid and antiandrogenic properties. The effects caused by drospirenone and ethinylestradiol, such as ovulation inhibition and changes in the endometrium results in contraception.

Ethinylestradiol Drospirenone is used as the following conditions:

  • Oral contraceptive to avoid pregnancy
  • Helps in reducing greasiness and acne of the skin and hair

Do not give this drug to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to drospirenone or ethinylestradiol
  • Patients who have a medical history of blood clots in the blood vessels of the leg
  • Embolism of lungs or other parts
  • A stroke or heart attack
  • Any health issue like angina pectoris that can cause stroke or a heart attack
  • Some types of migraine
  • Pancreatitis
  • Liver disease, kidney failure
  • Suspected to have cancer of the sexual organs or breasts
  • Diabetes mellitus with impaired blood vessels
  • Very high levels of fat in the blood
  • Very high blood pressure
  • Problems with blood clotting
  • Bleeding of the vagina
  • Breastfeeding
  • Pregnancy

Ethinylestradiol Drospirenone may have the following side effects:

  • Headache
  • Abdominal ache
  • Acne
  • Soreness and enlargement of the breasts
  • Painful or irregular menstruation
  • Weight gain
  • Vaginal infections
  • Herpes simplex in lips
  • Allergic reactions which can be severe sometimes with skin swelling and/or mucosa
  • Increased appetite
  • Depression
  • Sleeping disorders
  • Nervousness
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Pins and needles sensation
  • Vertigo
  • Problems with vision
  • Irregular heart beat or abnormally fast heartbeat
  • Clots in a blood vessel of the leg or lungs
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Migraine
  • Varicose veins
  • Sore throat
  • Stomach and/or intestinal swelling
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Hair loss
  • Itching
  • Skin rash
  • Dry skin
  • Seborrhoea dermatitis
  • Neck pain
  • Muscular cramps
  • Bladder infection
  • Breast lumps
  • Producing a milky fluid from nipples
  • Cyst in ovaries
  • Flushes
  • Absence of period
  • Excessive period
  • Vaginal secretion and dryness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Abnormal cervical smears
  • Water retention
  • Lack of energy
  • Excessive thirst sensations
  • Increase in sweating
  • Weight loss

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Breast cancer
  • Liver or gallbladder illness
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
  • Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • Illnesses which appeared for the 1st time during pregnancy or during previous use of sexual hormones
  • Hearing loss
  • Porphyria
  • Gestational herpes that is skin rash with pimples during pregnancy
  • Sydenham’s chorea
  • Chloasma
  • Hereditary angioedema
  • Surgery
  • Chronic Immobilization or serious accidents during treatment
  • Venous Thrombosis
  • Arterial Thrombosis
  • Cancer
  • Benign kidney tumors

Interactions

Ethinylestradiol Drospirenone may interact with the following drugs:

  • Medicines used to treat epilepsy like primidone
  • Phenytoin
  • Barbiturates
  • Carbamazepine
  • Oxcarbazepine
  • Drugs for Tuberculosis (example rifampicin)
  • Drugs for HIV (ritonavir)
  • Drugs for other infectious diseases (griseofulvin, ampicillin, tetracyclines)
  • John’s wort
