Ergometrine is a drug that causes contractions of the muscles in the uterus. At low doses, it can increase the frequency and amplitude of contractions while at higher doses, it increases the basal tone of the uterus. Ergometrine also gives rise to vasoconstriction of peripheral and cerebral blood vessels.
Ergometrine is used in the active management of the third stage of labor. It is also used in the treatment and prophylaxis of postpartum hemorrhage as well as of excessive uterine bleeding.
