DIMETHYL FUMARATE

Dimethyl fumarate is a drug that belongs to a type of drugs known as fumaric acid derivatives. This drug has anti-inflammatory properties and is said to affect the body’s immune system. It reduces immune cell activation and decreases the release of inflammatory substances. It also affects the way cells and tissues are protected against stress.

Dimethyl fumarate is used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and other inflammatory conditions.

Dimethyl fumarate should not be used by people with hypersensitivity to it.

Dimethyl fumarate may give rise to the following side effects:

  • Anaphylaxis
  • Angioedema
  • Leucopenia
  • Lymphopenia
  • Opportunistic infections
  • Liver injury
  • Flushing
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhoea, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, constipation, abdominal discomfort, flatulence
  • Proteinuria
  • Ketonuria
  • Albuminuria
  • Headache
  • Numbness
  • Fatigue
  • Asthenia
  • Decreased appetite
  • Increased liver enzymes
  • Hot flush
  • Eosinophilia
  • Leukocytosis
  • Redness
  • Burning sensation of the skin
  • Itching skin
  • Rash
  • Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy

Precautions

Dimethyl fumarate should be used with caution in patients with the following conditions:

  • Severe gastrointestinal disorders
  • Serious infections
  • Severe kidney and liver impairment
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding

 

Interactions

Dimethyl fumarate may have interactions with the following medications:

  • Methotrexate
  • Ciclosporin
  • Aminoglycosides
  • Lithium
  • Live vaccines
