DIMETHINDENE

Dimethindene is a drug that is known as a derivative of alkylamine. It has sedative properties and is also known as a mast cell stabilizer. It is also known as an antagonist of H1 receptors and may have the ability to paradoxically stimulate the brain and the nervous system.

Dimethindene is used in allergies as an oral tablet. It is also used to treat itchy conditions of the skin as a gel or lotion applied to the skin.

Dimethindene should not be used by babies. It should also not be used by people with the following conditions:

  • Urinary retention
  • Paralytic ileus of the intestines

Dimethindene can give rise to the following side effects

  • Central nervous system depression
  • Central nervous system excitation
  • Dryness of mouth
  • Thickened respiratory mucus
  • Urinary retention
  • Constipation
  • Tachycardia
  • Arrhythmias or irregular heart beat
  • Blurring of vision
  • Gastrointestinal upset
  • Bleeding problems
  • Skin sensitivity (when applied to the skin)

Precautions

Take extra caution in elderly people, pregnant women, breastfeeding women and people with the following conditions:

  • Closed-angle glaucoma
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Epilepsy
  • Gastrointestinal obstruction

Dimethindene can interact with the following medicines:

  • Aminoglycosides
  • Antibiotics
  • Alcohol
  • Barbiturates
  • Sedatives
  • Opioid analgesics
  • Neuroleptics
  • Betahistine
  • Mefloquine
  • Thalidomide
  • MAOIs
  • Atropine
  • TCAs

If you have used Dimethindene more than the recommended dose, seek medical help immediately.
