DEXCHLORPHEN-PSE-CHLOPHEDIANOL

Dexchlorphen, PSE, and Chlophedianol are drug combinations used to treat symptoms caused by the common cold, allergies, hay fever and other breathing illnesses like sinusitis and bronchitis. Dexchlorphen is an antihistamine that helps in relieving symptoms like watery eyes, itching and sneezing. This drug also contains decongestant that helps in relieving stuffy nose symptoms. Chlophedianol is a cough suppressant that signals the brain to reduce the urge to cough.

This combination medication is used to temporarily treat symptoms like cough, watery eyes, itchiness of eyes and nose caused by respiratory illnesses. It may include common cold, allergies, flu, hay fever, sinusitis and bronchitis.

This drug is not advisable for children under 12 years old.

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to any of its content or if you have any other allergies.

Common side effects of this drug may include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Nervousness
  • blurred vision
  • dry mouth, nose, throat

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Serious side effects may include:

  • Mental or Mood Changes (such as Hallucinations, Confusion)
  • Shaking (Tremors)
  • Trouble Urinating
  • Weakness
  • Fast, Slow or Irregular Heartbeat
  • Seizure
  • Severe Allergic Reaction

Seek immediate medical help if any of these happen to you.

Precautions

Before taking this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist if:

  • You are allergic to any of its ingredients; or if you have any other allergies.
  • You are about to go under a surgery.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Your medical history, especially of:
    • breathing problems (such as asthma, emphysema)
    • diabetes
    • glaucoma
    • heart problems
    • high blood pressure
    • seizures
    • overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
    • urination problems

This drug may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Avoid activities requiring alertness or clear vision such as driving until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit the use of alcohol and certain other medications that cause drowsiness.

Older adults and children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness, drowsiness, mental or mood changes, constipation, fast heartbeat, trouble urinating, or blood pressure changes.

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Alcohol
  • MAO inhibitors such as Isocarboxazid, Linezolid, Methylene Blue, Moclobemide, Phenelzine, Procarbazine, Rasagiline
  • Antihistamines Applied To The Skin such as Diphenhydramine Cream, Ointment, Spray
  • Opioid pain or cough relievers such as Codeine, Hydrocodone
  • Drugs for sleep or anxiety such as Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Zolpidem
  • Muscle relaxants such as Carisoprodol, Cyclobenzaprine
  • Other antihistamines such as Cetirizine, Diphenhydramine

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Large pupils
  • Flushing
  • shaking (tremor)
  • hallucinations
  • confusion
  • seizures

In children, excitement may occur first before loss of coordination, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, seizures.
