Colestipol is a bile acid sequestrant and works in the bowel. It helps remove bile acids from the body then uses cholesterol to make more bile acids. This causes blood cholesterol levels to decrease.

Colestipol is used to lower high cholesterol levels in the blood. By declogging the blood vessels, it may help prevent medical problems.
Colestipol may cause dizziness or light-headedness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use colestipol with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider.
You may experience constipation, stomach/abdominal pain, gas, nausea, and vomiting after taking this drug. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Eat a diet adequate in fiber, drink plenty of water, and exercise to prevent constipation. If you become constipated while using this drug, consult your pharmacist for help in selecting a stool softener and/or a laxative.

Symptoms of overdose may include severe stomach/abdominal pain. If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call emergency hotline.
