CODEINE

Codeine is a narcotic pain-reliever and cough suppressant that binds to receptors in the brain (opioid receptors) that sends pain signals.

This medication is used to treat mild to moderately severe pain. Codeine can also cause sedation drowsiness and depresses breathing. This drug is often used along with Acetaminophen or Aspirin to relieve pain.

Do not use this drug:

  • If you have severe breathing problems, a blockage in your stomach or intestines, or frequent asthma attacks or hyperventilation.
  • If you have a history of drug dependence or abuse.
  • To children younger than 12 years unless specifically prescribed by the doctor.
  • To children under 18 years who recently had surgery.

Common side effects may include:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Sedation
  • Allergic reactions
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Rash
  • Itching

Notify your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.

Your doctor may have prescribed this medication because he or she judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects.

Serious side effects may include:

  • Life-Threatening Respiratory Depression
  • Severe Low Blood Pressure
  • Adrenal Insufficiency
  • Accidental Ingestion of Codeine Can Result in Fatal Overdose

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these serious side effects.

Precautions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor or pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to any content of this drug or if you have other allergies.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You medical condition such as:
  • Severe Asthma or Breathing Problems
  • A Blockage in your Stomach or Intestines
  • Frequent Asthma Attacks or Hyperventilation
  • Your medical history, especially of:
  • Liver Disease
  • Asthma
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Breathing Disorders
  • Abnormal Curvature of the Spine that Affects Breathing
  • Kidney Disease
  • Head Injury or Brain Tumor
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Blockage in your Digestive Tract
  • A Gallbladder or Pancreas Disorder
  • Underactive Thyroid
  • Addison’s Disease or other Adrenal Gland Disorder
  • Enlarged Prostate
  • Urination Problems
  • Mental Illness
  • Drug or Alcohol Addiction

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may either lessen the effectiveness of this drug or heighten the risk for severe side effects. It’s important to inform your doctor all the medication including prescription and non-prescription and herbal medicines you are taking or going to take.

Possible interactions with this drug are:

  • Alcohol
  • Sedative like Valium (Diazepam, Alprazolam, Lorazepam, Ativan, Klonopin, Restoril, Tranxene, Versed, Xanax, and others)
  • Drugs that Stimulate and also Block Opioid Receptors (For Example, Pentazocine)
  • Drugs that Block the Action of Acetylcholine (Anticholinergic Drugs)
  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) (Isocarboxazid, Phenelzine, Tranylcypromine, Selegiline and Procarbazine)

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing.

Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Slow Breathing And Heart Rate
  • Severe Drowsiness
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Cold and Clammy Skin
  • Pinpoint Pupils
