CLOBAZAM

This medication belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines, which act on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. Clobazam is used with other medications to help control seizures. This drug works by enhancing the effects of a certain natural chemical in the body (GABA).

This drug is used together with other medication(s) to control seizures in adults and children 2 years of age and older who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and often causes developmental delays).

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to any ingredient in Clobazam.

Side effects of this drug include:

  • Tiredness
  • Problems With Coordination
  • Difficulty Speaking Or Swallowing
  • Drooling
  • Change In Appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Cough
  • Joint Pain

Other side effects of this drug include:

  • Difficult, Painful, Or Frequent Urination
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Sores In Your Mouth
  • Rash
  • Hives
  • Peeling Or Blistering Skin
  • Fever

Tell your doctor promptly if any of these effects persist or worsen. Also, call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

Precautions

Before using clobazam, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • If you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • If you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • If you have glaucoma or increased pressure in the eye, liver or kidney problems, myasthenia gravis, or the blood disorder porphyria
  • If you have a history of lung or breathing problems (eg, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD]), mood or mental problems (eg, depression), or suicidal thoughts or actions
  • If you have a history of alcohol or other substance abuse or dependence

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may interfere with how your medication works. Tell your doctor about all your medications and any you start or stop using during treatment with clobazam.

The following may interact with Clobazam:

  • Sodium Oxybate
  • Fluconazole
  • Fluvoxamine

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing. Symptoms of overdose may include: confusion, weakness, severe drowsiness/dizziness, slow/shallow breathing, loss of consciousness, slowed/decreased reflexes.
