CICLESONIDE

This medication is an inhaler used for long term control of asthma symptoms. Ciclesonide belongs to the class of medications called corticosteroids that prevents irritation and swelling in the airways.

Ciclesonide nasal spray is used to treat the symptoms of seasonal (occurs only at certain times of the year), and perennial (occurs all year round) allergic rhinitis. This drug works by preventing and decreasing inflammation (swelling that can cause other symptoms) in the nose.

Do not use ciclesonide aerosol if:

  • You are allergic to any ingredient in ciclesonide aerosol
  • You have recently had an open sore in your nose, nasal surgery, or a nasal injury and it has not healed yet

If any of these apply to you, contact your doctor or health care provider right away.

Ciclesonide may cause children to grow more slowly. It is not known whether using ciclesonide decreases the final adult height that children will reach. Talk to your doctor about the risks of giving this medication to your child.

Common side effects of this drug may include:

  • Headache
  • Nosebleed
  • Burning Or Irritation In The Nose
  • Earache
  • Painful White Patches In Nose Or Throat
  • Flu-Like Symptoms
  • Vision Problems
  • Injury To Nose
  • New Or Increased Acne (Pimples)
  • Easy Bruising
  • Enlarged Face And Neck
  • Extreme Tiredness
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Irregular Menstruation (Periods)
  • Hives
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling Of The Face, Throat, Lips, Eyes, Hands, Feet, Ankles Or Lower Legs
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty Breathing Or Swallowing
  • Wheezing

Tell your doctor promptly if any of these effects persist or worsen. Also, call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication.

Precautions

Before using ciclesonide, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other corticosteroids (e.g., beclomethasone, fluticasone); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can trigger allergic reactions or other problems.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Untreated Infections (E.G., Fungus, Bacteria)
  • Certain Eye Problems (Glaucoma, Cataracts, Herpes Infection Of The Eye)
  • Liver Disease
  • Adrenal Gland Problems (E.G., Adrenal Insufficiency)
  • Underactive Thyroid (Hypothyroidism)
  • Bone Loss (Osteoporosis).

 

Interactions

Drug interactions may interfere with how your medication works. Tell your doctor about all your medications and any you start or stop using during treatment with ciclesonide.

Notify your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of:

  • Aldesleukin
  • Corticosteroids Taken by Mouth (E.G., Prednisone, Dexamethasone)
  • Mifepristone
  • Drugs Affecting the Removal of Ciclesonide from Your System (Potent Cyp 3a4 Inhibitors Such As Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Nelfinavir, Ritonavir).

Call emergency hotline if someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing. Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • Enlarged Face And Neck
  • New Or Worsening Acne
  • Easy Bruising
  • Extreme Tiredness
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Irregular Menstrual Periods
