WARFARIN SODIUM

Coumadin is an anticoagulant drug that acts by hindering the creation of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors. It leads to the decrease in the activities of Factors VII, IX, X and II. This decrease is reliant upon the dose given. Anticoagulants have no immediate impact on a formed thrombus, nor do they reverse damage due to ischemia. It prevents further coagulation and prevents thromboembolic complications.

Warfardin sodium is used in the following:

  • Prophylaxisfor thromboembolism
  • Venous thrombosis and its extension
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Thromboembolic complications associated with atrial fibrillation
  • Cardiac valve replacement

Do not give warfardin sodium to people with the following conditions:

  • Pregnancy

Warfardin sodium may have the following side effects:

  • Hemorrhage from any tissue or organ
  • Paralysis
  • Headache
  • Chest pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficult breathing
  • Swallowing
  • Unexplained swelling
  • Unexplained shock

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Interactions

Warfarin sodium may interact with the following medicines:

  • Ibuprofen
  • Indomethacin
  • Influenza virus vaccine
  • Mefenamic acid
  • Methyldopa
  • Methylphenidate

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Appearance of blood in stools or urine
  • Hematuria
  • Excessive menstrual bleeding
  • Melena
  • Petechiae
  • Excessive bruising
