NIFEDIPINE

Nifedipine is a drug that is known as a calcium channel blocker. It keeps calcium from entering the slow channels of cardiac and smooth muscles amid depolarisation, delivering vasodilatation. It decreases after load, peripheral resistance in the blood vessels and blood pressure. It enhances blood flow and causes reflex tachycardia.

Do not give Nifedipine to people with the following conditions:

  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Acute unstable angina

Nifedipine may have the following side effects:

  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Headache
  • Hypotension
  • Peripheral edema
  • Tachycardia
  • Palpitations
  • Nausea
  • Constipation

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patients with hypotension
  • Poor cardiac reserve
  • Heart failure
  • Severe aortic stenosis
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Overdose may bring about the following symptoms:

  • Pronounced hypotension
  • Bradycardia
  • Hyperglycaemia
  • Loss of consciousness leading to coma
  • Heart rhythm disturbances
  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Hypoxia
  • Cardiogenic shock with pulmonary edema
