IRBESARTAN + AMLODIPINE

Irbesartan + amlodipine is a combination drug for hypertension that is composed of two medicines: irbesartan and amlodipine. Studies have shown that the combination has more anti-hypertensive effects than when used alone. Irbesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker while amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that lowers blood pressure in the blood vessels. The effects of these two drugs are complimentary with each other.

Irbersartan + amlodipine is used in the treatment of the following:

Do not give Irbersartan + amlodipine in people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to either or both of the active substances or to any of the excipients
  • Hypersensitivity to dihydropyridines
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Clinically significant aortic stenosis
  • Unstable angina (excluding Prinzmetal’s angina)
  • Pregnancy and lactation

Interactions

Irbersartan + amlodipine may interact with the following medicines:

  • Potassium-sparing diuretics
  • Potassium supplements
  • Salt substitutes containing potassium
  • NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors
  • Lithium

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Excessive peripheral vasodilatation
  • Reflex tachycardia
  • Hypotension
  • Shock
