Mecobalamin is used to treat megaloblastic anemia and peripheral neuropathies due to vitamin B12 deficiency. It is the neurologically-active form of vitamin B12 and is a water-soluble vitamin in the body.
Mecobalamin is the cofactor in the methionine synthase enzyme, which is responsible to transfer methyl groups in regenerating methionine from homocysteine.
In anemic conditions, mecobalamin increases the production of erythrocyte by helping nucleic acid synthesis in the bone marrow and also helps in the growth and division of erythrocytes.
