XEFATREX

  • Intra-abdominal infections, such as peritonitis or appendicitis.
  • Bacterial meningitis.
  • Gonorrhea, including uncomplicated genital, rectal, and pharyngeal infections. Xefatrex is often used as a first-line treatment for gonorrhea due to increasing antibiotic resistance.
  • Lyme Disease: Xefatrex is also used to treat Lyme disease, particularly in cases where the infection has spread to the central nervous system or joints.
  • Endocarditis: Xefatrex may be used in combination with other antibiotics to treat infective endocarditis, which is an infection of the heart valve.
  • Surgical Prophylaxis: Xefatrex is sometimes given before certain surgeries to prevent post-operative infections.

This medicine may be recommended for different uses. Approach your physician or pharmacist for more information.

Do not use Xefatrex in people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity: Individuals who have shown a previous allergic reaction to Xefatrex or other cephalosporin antibiotics should avoid using this medication.
  • Previous severe allergic reactions: If an individual has experienced a severe allergic reaction, such as anaphylaxis, to any beta-lactam antibiotic (including penicillins or cephalosporins), Xefatrex should be avoided.
  • Neonates with hyperbilirubinemia: Xefatrex should not be used in neonates (newborns) who have hyperbilirubinemia, as it can increase the risk of bilirubin encephalopathy, a condition that affects the brain due to high levels of bilirubin.
  • Premature infants: Xefatrex should be used cautiously in premature infants, as their kidneys may not be fully developed to excrete the medication properly.
  • Calcium-containing solutions: Xefatrex should not be mixed or administered concurrently with calcium-containing solutions, as it can form precipitates that can cause adverse effects.

A serious allergy to this medication is uncommon. In any case, seek emergency medical help if you see any manifestations of a serious allergic response, including a rash, tingling or swelling particularly of the face or tongue or throat, dizziness or difficulty in breathing.

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Allergic reactions: If you have a history of allergies to any antibiotics, especially cephalosporins or penicillins, it is crucial to inform your healthcare provider before starting Xefatrex. Allergic reactions can range from mild skin rashes to severe anaphylaxis, so it is essential to be cautious.
  • Kidney and liver function: Xefatrex is primarily eliminated from the body through the kidneys, so individuals with impaired kidney function should be closely monitored while taking this medication. Liver function should also be assessed, as Xefatrex can rarely cause liver problems. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosage adjustments if necessary.
  • Blood clotting disorders: Xefatrex can affect blood clotting by reducing vitamin K levels in the body. If you have a bleeding disorder or are taking blood-thinning medications, your healthcare provider should be aware, as additional monitoring may be required.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Xefatrex is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. However, it is always important to consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication during these periods to ensure the benefits outweigh any potential risks.

Prior to taking this medicine, tell your physician or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or if you have some other hypersensitivities. This drug may contain inert ingredients which can cause unfavorable side effects or different issues. Talk with your pharmacist for more information.

Interactions

Xefatrex may interact with the following medicines:

  • Calcium-containing solutions: Xefatrex should not be mixed or administered concurrently with calcium-containing solutions, as it can form precipitates that can cause adverse effects. It is important to avoid mixing Xefatrex with calcium-containing intravenous solutions or administering them through the same intravenous line.
  • Anticoagulants: Xefatrex may enhance the effects of anticoagulant medications, such as warfarin, which can increase the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of blood clotting parameters is necessary if you are taking anticoagulant drugs concurrently with Xefatrex.
  • Probenecid: Probenecid, a medication used to treat gout, can decrease the elimination of Xefatrex from the body, leading to increased levels of Xefatrex. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage of Xefatrex if you are taking probenecid.
  • Aminoglycosides: When used together, Xefatrex can enhance the potential kidney toxicity of aminoglycoside antibiotics, such as gentamicin. Your healthcare provider will monitor kidney function closely if you require treatment with both medications.
  • Oral contraceptives: Xefatrex may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills. It is important to use alternative or additional methods of contraception while taking Xefatrex and for some time after completing the treatment. Consult with your healthcare provider for guidance.

Inform your physician about the drugs you take including over-the-counter medications, prescribed drugs, supplements and vitamins.

The effects of certain medications can change if you consume different medications or herbal products simultaneously. This can build your risk for side effects or may cause your drugs not to work effectively. These interactions are conceivable, yet don’t generally happen. Your physician or pharmacist can prevent or oversee interactions by changing how you utilize your prescriptions or by close checking.

While utilizing this drug, don’t start, stop, or change the dose of other medicines you are using without your physician’s advice.

If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor right away.
