Nifurtoinol is comparable to nitrofurantoin in terms of characteristics. Most gram positive and gram negative urinary tract bacteria are bactericidal.

The medication dose given by your physician is based on your health conditions, other medications or food supplements taken, and your reaction to the treatment. Do not use Nifurtoinol in people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to nitrofurans
  • Impaired renal function
  • Infants less than 3 months old
  • Glucose-6-Phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
  • Porphyria
  • Pregnancy

Nifurtoinol may have the following side effects:

  • Gastrointestinal effects
  • Neurological effects
  • Severe, sometimes irreversible peripheral polyneuropathy
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Acute pulmonary sensitivity
  • Subacute or chronic pulmonary symptoms
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Blood disorders
  • Brownish discoloration of urine

Keep in mind that your physician has recommended this drug since he or she has known that the advantage to you is more significant than the risk of adverse reactions. Many individuals utilizing this medicine don’t have serious side effects.

  • Quinolone antibacterials
  • Probenecid 
  • Sulfinpyrazone
  • Magnesium trisilicate
  • Oral contraceptives
