LIPODYSTROPHY

Lipodystrophy  is a disorder where the adipose (fat tissues) tissue in the body has an abnormal quantity and dispersion. The loss and re-distribution of the fat tissue in various patterns cause different kinds of this disorder. Adipose tissue is highly essential because it retains the energy we utilize as triglyceride (calories) (a type of fat).

Moreover, it produces hormones that regulate your body’s energy consumption and how much you consume. The capacity of the adipose tissue for the saving of energy from the food is decreased in individuals with lipodystrophy, as it is termed triglyceride, in either the whole body or specific regions such as legs and arms.

TYPES

The three types of Lipodystrophy:

  • Congenital generalized lipodystrophy. This is a rare genetic condition distinguished by the total loss of adipose tissue and intense muscularity that is typically present during birth.
  • Acquired generalized lipodystrophy. This is a rare condition distinguished by lack of subcutaneous adipose tissue with serious insulin resistance causing hypertriglyceridemia and diabetes.
  • Acquired partial lipodystrophy. This is a condition characterized by the loss of adipose fat from the chest, shoulders, face, neck, abdomen, and arms.

SYMPTOMS

The most common symptoms of this disorder are:

DIAGNOSIS

  • Ask you about your other symptoms

Other ways to identify this disorder are:

  • Genetic testing. This test may be performed if genetic forms of lipodystrophy are supposed.
  • Blood chemical profiles. This test is conducted to measure the amount of adipose tissue in the blood.

TREATMENT

There’s still no cure for Lipodystrophy. Nevertheless, certain therapies may extend life and enhance the quality of life. Many of these therapies are designed to mitigate lipodystrophy problems, including:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Diabetes

The doctor may recommend a safe diet with minimal fat and an excellent workout to maintain a reasonable weight. Moreover, insulin and other medicinal products may be prescribed for diabetes-resistance insulin. Also, medicines, such as statins, ought to help people manage elevated cholesterol, coupled with fish oil supplements.
