DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION

DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a common elective surgical procedure which involves the placement of a neurostimulator or a brain pacemaker. This neurostimulator sends electrical impulses through implanted electrodes to regulate brain activity. This electrode focuses and specifically targets the brain. This is als0 used as a treatment for the people having Parkinson’s disease, essential tremors and dystonia.

Deep brain stimulation began in the 1940s as a branch of stereotactic lesion surgery for patients having Parkinson’s disease. Due to the advancement of technology and neurosurgical techniques, deep brain stimulation was developed. DBS aims to relieve symptoms of bradykinesia, rigidity and tremor especially in patients with Parkinson’s disease.

It is a technique that is used to treat neurological disorders for over 50 years.

Until now, many people having Parkinson’s disease, essential tremors and dystonia have undergone this procedure worldwide. Through this, the symptoms that the patients of Parkinson’s disease and other diseases encounter were controlled. This neurological surgery results and showed the effectiveness and how helpful deep brain stimulation. As of today, doctors find a way to make deep brain stimulation more efficient as technology advances.
