CEFTRIAXONE

Uses

Ceftriaxone is used in the treatment of the following conditions:

Susceptible infections
Prophylaxis of surgical infections
Colorectal surgery
Uncomplicated gonorrhoea

Warning

Do not give Ceftriaxone to people with the following conditions:

Hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone or other cephalosporins
Neonates less than 41 weeks corrected gestational age
Neonates greater than 41 weeks corrected gestational age with jaundice
Hypo albuminaemia

Side Effects

Ceftriaxone may have the following side effects:

Diarrhea
Nausea
Vomiting
Pruritus
Fever
Chill
Anaphylaxis
Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea and colitis
Haemolytic anaemia

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

Patient with history of penicillin allergy
History of gastrointestinal disease such as colitis
Gall bladder disease
Renal or hepatic impairment
Pregnancy
Lactation

Interactions

Ceftriaxone may interact with the following medicines:

Aminoglycosides
BCG
Typhoid vaccine
Sodium picosulfate
VitaminK antagonists, such as warfarin
Probenecid
Calcium-containing IV solutions

Symptoms of overdose include the following:
