CEFTRIAXONE

Ceftriaxone is utilized to treat bacterial infections. This medicine is from a class of antibiotic medications known as cephalosporins. It works by preventing the growth of microorganisms.

This drug is given by infusion into a muscle or vein as prescribed by your doctor.

Ceftriaxone is used in the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Susceptible infections
  • Prophylaxis of surgical infections
  • Colorectal surgery
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhoea

Do not give Ceftriaxone to people with the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to ceftriaxone or other cephalosporins
  • Neonates less than 41 weeks corrected gestational age
  • Neonates greater than 41 weeks corrected gestational age with jaundice
  • Hypo albuminaemia

Ceftriaxone may have the following side effects:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Pruritus
  • Fever
  • Chill
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea and colitis
  • Haemolytic anaemia

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Patient with history of penicillin allergy
  • History of gastrointestinal disease such as colitis
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Renal or hepatic impairment
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation

Interactions

Ceftriaxone may interact with the following medicines:

  • Aminoglycosides
  • BCG
  • Typhoid vaccine
  • Sodium picosulfate
  • VitaminK antagonists, such as warfarin
  • Probenecid
  • Calcium-containing IV solutions

Symptoms of overdose include the following:
