BOURBON VIRUS

Bourbon virus is a newly discovered disease that was recorded in June 2018. This type of virus belongs to a group of viruses named thogotoviruses. A few of those viruses in the said group can affect many populations globally. Unfortunately, medical experts have not yet discovered how people get infected by this kind of virus, but they have determined that the virus is passed on to humans through ticks or most insect bites.

There were recorded cases of people contracting bourbon virus in June 2018, wherein those documented cases originated in the midwest and the southern United States. But, experts have not yet found if other places in the country have records of people infected by this virus.

Currently, there are no sub-types for the said virus known-to-date.

 

SYMPTOMS

As of this typing, the current known symptoms for this virus infection are listed below:

  • Fever
  • Tiredness
  • Rash
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood count

Experts are still studying the effects and symptoms of this virus and are still conducting various studies and experiments to learn about this virus and its other side effects to a human host.

Take note that insects or ticks bite people at risk for this kind of virus. Therefore, if a person’s job or activity involves being exposed to insects and ticks, proper protective gear is highly advised to avoid being infected.

To reduce the chance of being infected with this virus, the following listed below can be done by everyone, since there is no known vaccine for this virus infection.

  1. Usage of insect repellents.
  2. They are wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
  3. We are avoiding areas that are bushy and wooded.
  4. We are doing thorough tick checks after being outdoors. 

Currently, there is no specific way of knowing if one has already been infected with the virus. Instead, it must rely on the common symptoms that show physically on an infected person. Additionally, contacting your local doctor or state-licensed physician is best advised when you are experiencing some of the symptoms mentioned above.

 

Do take note that there is a possibility that your pet animals might be infected with this virus since ticks and various insect bites can spread the virus, that can also target your pet.

DIAGNOSIS

Unfortunately, as of the moment, there is no determined diagnosis for this kind of virus infection. However, there are multiple protocols and tests medical experts can advise patients infected with this virus. It is highly recommended that people showing these virus infection symptoms must immediately consult their local doctor for treatment.

 

TREATMENT

Same with the diagnosis of this virus infection, sadly, there is no recorded specific treatment for this virus infection. Still, there are forms of supportive therapies available to patients affected with this virus infection.
