BOILS AND STYES

Boils and styes are two forms of infections that may arise in various body parts. Whenever a hair follicle or an oil gland is infected, they appear as painful, red, pus-filled infected pimples called boils and styes when they appear on the eyelid.

Furthermore, boils cause a red, painful lump to grow beneath the skin as pus gathers. Meanwhile, a stye is a type of boil that appears on the eyelid. It is an inflammation of the eyelid caused by a Staphylococcus bacterium infection. Styes also develop a hump that contains a small quantity of pus.

Boils and styes will usually go away on their own, but there are certain things you may do at home to assist in treating them.

TYPES

Types of boils:

  • Carbuncle
  • Cystic Acne
  • Armpit and Groin
  • Pilonidal Abscess
  • Stye

Types of Styes:

  • External hordeolum
  • Internal hordeolum

SYMPTOMS

Boils and styes exhibit varying and similar symptoms since they are different infections, even if stye is a type of boil. If you have one, avoid squeezing it to prevent extra irritation.
Boils may cause the following symptoms:

  • Draining of pus
  • Popped boil
  • Formation of a yellow or white head
  • Painful lumps
  • Skin inflammation and discomfort in a limited area
  • Scarring

Meanwhile, symptoms of styes include:

  • The sensation that there is something in the eye
  • Discomfort while blinking
  • Tearing
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Mucous discharge from the eye
  • Hazy vision
  • Itchiness in the eyes
  • Feeling of burning
  • Tenderness

DIAGNOSIS

Boils and styes may be diagnosed by looking at them. A pus sample might also be submitted to a lab for testing. This might be beneficial when you have repeated infections or an illness that hasn’t responded to regular therapy.

TREATMENT

Most boils and styes resolve on their own without medical treatment. However, pain medications might be beneficial when there is a specific sore. Meanwhile, avoid using contact lenses, lotions, or eye makeup until the boils and styes infection has cleared up entirely.

Home cures and therapies recommended by doctors include:

  • Warm compress: Gently pressing a warm compress against the eye might assist in relieving discomfort and facilitate the discharge of pus.
  • Antibiotic: If the stye continues, the doctor might recommend antibiotic eye drops or a topical antibiotic cream.
