Anaplastic large cell lymphomas are uncommon lymphomas that are recognized from different lymphomas through their cells and antibodies. This type of lymphoma affects the skin and areas outside the lymph nodes. It is common among children and among males. It is a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).
ALCL occurs when white blood cells called T-cells become abnormal. These are commonly produced in the lymph nodes, yet can affect different parts of the body.
TYPES
Doctors categorize ALCL as ALK-positive or ALK-negative. This depends on whether the lymphoma cells have a protein called anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK).
SYMPTOMS
The lymphoma appears as a simple swelling in the neck, armpit or groin. General symptoms include fatigue and loss of appetite. There may also be night sweats, high temperatures (fevers) or weight loss. Signs and symptoms depend on where the lymphoma is located in the body.
With cutaneous ALCL, you may at first observe raised, red bumps on the skin that don’t disappear.
DIAGNOSIS
The most common test for ALCL is a biopsy, in which a small sample is obtained and checked in the laboratory for lymphoma cells .You may also have various tests to help your doctor diagnose lymphoma.
TREATMENT
Most cases are treated with chemotherapy and steroids. The doctor may also suggest radiotherapy or medicines in some cases. Your doctor may ask you to be a part of a clinical trial if another treatment is needed for ALCL.
