SORE LIPS

Some of us say lips are an asset. But how about having chapped, dry, sore lips? We should know some facts about our lips and on how to treat or handle it with care.

Our lips do not have melanin that will protect us from direct heat of the sun; that’s why we are prone to what they called chapped or sore lips.

Chapped or sore lips mean that the tissue covering the lips is tighter or has started to break out because of less moisture.

We need some barrier from the sun or wind for enable us to seal moisture on those chapped lips. One example of this barrier is a lip balm; it contains petroleum that helps moisten the skin of the affected lip.

Symptoms of sore lips include the following:

  • Dry lips
  • Tender lips
  • Chapped lips

You need to consult to your nearest doctor regarding your sore lips.  He or she will prescribe some antibiotic or antifungal cream to treat the affected area of the lips and reduce the risk for infection and pain.

Do’s

  • Drink plenty of water to reduce dryness of the lips. Keep yourself hydrated while in hot weather to avoid chapped lips.
  • Use some lip moisturizer to avoid flaking of the lips, such as an ointment or lip balm.
  • A lip balm can temporarily protect your lips from the sun because it seals the cracks of the dry lips.

Don’ts

  • Don’t keep on licking the dry lips because the more you lick your lips the drier it is. Licking can wash away the natural oil from the lips.
  • Don’t attempt to pick or bite off flakes of dried skin because this will only make your lips bleed and become irritated.
  • Don’t apply anything without proper guidance from doctors.
  • Don’t wait before it’s too late, healing is better than pain.
