Possible Reasons Why Your Period is Late

A late period can be stressful, especially if you’re used to a regular menstrual cycle or concerned about an unplanned pregnancy. But there are many other reasons why a woman might have a late period. Here are among the most common reasons:

Stress. Stress, especially if prolonged, can disrupt the menstrual cycle, prolonging it or making it shorter, or even causing a missed period. Manage your stress by avoiding stressful situations, exercising regularly, practicing relaxation techniques, and getting enough sleep.

 

Perimenopause. It is the time when a woman’s body makes the natural transition to menopause, marking the end of her reproductive years. It can cause estrogen levels to fluctuate, which can alter the menstrual cycle. Many women in perimenopause experience irregular or missed periods.

 

Weight loss. Significant weight loss or intense exercise can cause a missed period. Being underweight or having a low body-fat ratio can lower reproductive hormone levels to the point where ovulation and menstruation do not occur. If you have missed one or several periods after losing a significant amount of weight, consult your doctor about getting the appropriate amount of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that your body needs.

 

Obesity. Obesity can also disrupt hormonal levels and cause missed periods. In some cases, obesity and missed periods could be a sign of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which requires a visit to a doctor for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

 

Birth Control. You may experience a change in your menstrual cycle when you go on or off birth control. Birth control pills contain estrogen and progestin, hormones that prevent your ovaries from releasing eggs. It can take up to six months for your cycle to become consistent again after you stop taking birth control pills. Implanted or injected contraceptives can also cause missed periods.
