DIAGNOSIS
The Papanicolaou test, also known as Pap Smear, is usually the choice for screening. In performing the said screening method, the medical practitioner will wash your cervix to have a sample of cells. The cells will be observed under a microscope to inspect if there are any unusual cells.
Recently, the method that is being used more is the liquid-based system. It is said to be the same as pap smear, but it may be more reliable.
If your first test results or screening results are unusual, these tests are used:
- Biopsy– atissue sample is obtained from the body to inspect it more thoroughly.
- Colposcopyis a method of inspecting your cervix, vulva, and vagina to know if there are any signs of abnormalities or disease. The instrument that is being used in this procedure is called a colposcope.
TREATMENT
Treating cervical dysplasia will depend on the diagnosis and the presence of atypical cells. Numerous mild cases will be resolved without any treatment. Pap tests may be recommended by your doctor every 6 to 12 months rather than every 3 to 5 years. But if your condition worsens, treatments will be required.
- Cryosurgery (also known as Cryotherapy) – Cryosurgery is a kind of surgery that kills abnormal tissues using the freezing method
- LEEP is known as Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure– it is the process of removing abnormal cells in the cervix by burning it using a small electrical wire loop. This method may be done if there are some atypical cells found during the Pap test or colposcopy.
If you want to prevent cervical dysplasia, then you should do these things:
- Avoid smoking
- Do not forget to use a condom when you are planning to have sex.
- Do not have sex until you reach 18
The best way of lessening your chances of having cervical dysplasia is having the HPV vaccine. You should go and see your doctor if you meet the requirements for the vaccine
There are some cases when people with severe cervical dysplasia need to undergo hysterectomy. The surgery which removes the uterus is called hysterectomy.
