OXYTOCIN

Oxytocin is a drug used to induce labor during pregnancy. This drug incites uterine contractions that increase all through the pregnancy, achieving the maximum at term by multiplying oxytocin receptors. It also enhances the tone and amplitute of the uterine contractions at smaller dosages. It is known as a peptide hormone and a neuropeptide that is normally produced by the brain for social bonding, sexual reproduction, and childbirth.

Oxytocin is used in the following:

  • Postpartum hemorrhage
  • Labour induction
  • Oxytocin challenge test for evaluating of foetal distress
  • Facilitate lactation

Do not give Oxytocin to people with the following conditions:

  • Cephalopelvic disproportion
  • Abnormal presentation of the foetus
  • Hydramnios
  • Multiparae
  • Previous caesarian section or other uterine surgery
  • Hypertonic uterus
  • Uterine rupture

Oxytocin may have the following side effects:

  • Jaundice
  • Arrhythmias
  • Bradycardia
  • Maternal water intoxication
  • Prolonged uterine contractions causing foetal hypoxia and death
  • Rupture of gravid uterus
  • Afibrinogenaemia
  • Subarachnoid haemorrhage

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

  • Heart disorders
  • Women more than 35 years old
  • Lactation

 

Interactions

Oxytocin may interact with the following medicines:

  • Caudal block anaesthesia
  • Cyclopropane
  • Dinoprostone
  • Misoprostol

Symptoms of overdose include the following:

  • Tetanic uterine contractions
  • Impaired uterine blood flow
  • Amniotic fluid embolism
  • Uterine rupture
  • Hormone secretion and seizures

Seek medical help immediately.
