PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINE

A pneumococcal vaccine is an immunization vaccine against Streptococcus pneumoniae, a type of bacteria that causes pneumonia. Its use can prevent pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis.

There are two types of pneumococcal vaccines: conjugate immunizations and polysaccharide antibodies. They are given through injection either into a muscle or simply under the skin.

The pneumococcal vaccine ensures against common pneumococcal infections. Pneumococcal diseases are caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae and can cause pneumonia, septicemia and meningitis.

Uses

Pheumococcal Vaccine is used in the following:

Active immunization for the prevention of invasive disease, pneumonia and acute otitis media caused by Strep. pneumoniae
Prevention of pneumococcal disease (including pneumonia and invasive disease) caused by Strep. pneumoniae

Warning

Do not use Pneumococcal Vaccine in patients with the following conditions:

Hypersensitivity to diphtheria toxoid

Decreased appetite
Irritability
Drowsiness
Headache
Fever
Any vaccination-site erythema
Urticaria-like rash
Vomiting

Precautions

Take extra caution in patients with the following medical conditions:

Fever
Thrombocytopenia or any coagulation disorder, or to those receiving anticoagulant therapy
Children withsickle cell disease
Combined diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis hepatitis Buse
Inactivated polio vaccine andHaemophilus influenza type B vaccine use
Pregnancy
Lactation
Children less than 6 weeks of age
